AUSTIN, Texas, August 16, 2005 — Biophysical Corporation today announced that George Rodgers, M.D., has joined the company as president and chief medical officer. Dr. Rodgers has been in private practice in Austin since 1989, most recently as president of both the Austin Heart cardiology group and the Austin Heart Foundation. A noted authority in providing cardiovascular care and information to residents of central Texas, Dr. Rodgers has also served as medical director for the Heart Hospital of Austin, recognized as one of the nation's top facilities for cardiovascular care.
"We're very pleased that George has made this transition to help establish Biophysical Corporation as a leader in the emerging field of biomarker research and its consumer health applications," said Mark Chandler, chief executive officer. "His intellect and vision will guide us in taking our innovative health assessment program directly to the public."
Dr. Rodgers is currently the president of the Texas Chapter of the American College of Cardiology and serves on the Board of Governors of the American College of Cardiology. Board-certified in both internal medicine and the sub-specialty of cardiovascular disease, he has served on numerous regional and national clinical committees and has published more than 40 articles in medical journals. Dr. Rodgers is a summa cum laude graduate from Harvard University and attended UT Southwestern Medical School. He completed his residency training at UT Southwestern followed by a cardiology fellowship at the Baylor College of Medicine. He joins an experienced team of clinicians and executives, supported by a medical advisory board of internationally renowned physicians and scientists from leading medical institutions.
"Researchers around the world continue to verify that the accurate measurement of blood-based biomarkers can serve as an early warning for the presence of many medical conditions and diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders and autoimmune deficiencies," said Dr. Rodgers. "Now we're taking this proven technology from clinical and pharmaceutical research and making it available to the public, allowing individuals to receive the most comprehensive profile of their specific blood chemistry and health status ever offered."
Called Biophysical250, the assessment can be ordered through the company's Web site at www.biophysicalcorp.com. The assessment analyzes blood components whose affect on health is broadly recognized, as well as those recognized only by clinical specialists. In addition, Biophysical250 provides a baseline enabling individuals and their physicians to monitor changes and trends in blood chemistry over time.
To further support awareness of the role of blood-based biomarkers in disease detection and prevention, Biophysical Corporation has formed the Center for Biomarker Research as an affiliated, non-profit organization. The Center will initially serve as clearinghouse for published clinical studies on biomarkers. In the future, it is expected the Center will sponsor educational programs for physicians, as well as support and fund relevant research.
