What it will tell you

BiophysicalYou is featured in best-selling authors Drs. Roizen and Oz's new book, YOU: Staying Young as an assessment for geting a view of your current health status. Following the premise of the book, BiophysicalYou provides insight into many of the conditions.

BiophysicalYou measures more than 60 blood-based biomarkers to help assess:

Approximately 15 business days after your blood is drawn, you–and, in some states, your physician–will receive your BiophysicalYou test results. These results are presented in a well-organized report that includes an easy-to-understand overview, lab results for more than 60 biomarkers, and a reference glossary of the biomarkers included in the BiophysicalYou.

BiophysicalYou Endocrine Function and Metabolism Biomarkers

The endocrine system is the part of the body that releases hormones–the chemicals that tell an organ or gland to do something. As your body ages, your hormone levels tend to change. Most drop off slightly, some drop off significantly and others may increase. While this is a normal and possibly even beneficial result of aging, hormone levels that fall too low or surge too high may cause bothersome symptoms or may indicate the presence of a disease. Diseases, of course, should be treated so that they don't cause long term consequences.

BiophysicalYou measures numerous biomarkers related to endocrine function and metabolism, including familiar markers like human growth hormone, insulin, progesterone, testosterone and thyroid stimulating hormone, and the not so familiar adiponectin, a hormone that modulates a number of important metabolic processes such as glucose regulation.

BiophysicalYou Cardiovascular Biomarkers

The cardiovascular system includes the heart and all the vessels that carry blood to and from the heart and throughout the body, including important organs such as the brain and the kidneys. Atherosclerosis is the disease in which cholesterol builds up inside the arteries, especially small arteries, which can lead to heart disease, stroke, and obstructions to the kidneys, legs and areas of the intestines. Atherosclerosis is a very common disease, affecting more than 50 percent of the population.

Heart attack and stroke can have devastating effects on both the quality and length of life, so it is important to understand your risk for these diseases and to take preventative action to avoid getting them. Fortunately, researchers and physicians have made great progress in understanding the causes of atherosclerosis and the treatment. BiophysicalYou measures total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, which can indicate the presence of atherosclerosis.

BiophysicalYou Liver, Kidney and Skeletal Muscle Function Biomarkers

A healthy liver and kidneys are important to your overall health and for healthy aging. As you age, your liver and kidney function can decrease.

The liver is responsible for a host of functions, including detoxification–an important biochemical process that changes a substance and prepares it for elimination from the body. Without detoxification, harmful substances would build up in the blood stream, interfering with natural biological processes and ultimately leading to illness and death. The kidneys are responsible for eliminating waste products from the body. They do this by filtering the blood of waste products and excess water, and then eliminating them from the body in the form of urine.

The skeletal muscles are made up of millions of individual fibers that contract and relax to make our bodies move. BiophysicalYou measures many biomarkers related to liver, kidney and skeletal muscle function, including one of the most useful tests of muscle function: total creatine kinase.

BiophysicalYou Nutrient, Vitamin and Mineral Biomarkers

Nutrition is vital for your body to function properly. An inadequate supply of nutrients is linked to many diseases and increases the risk of developing disease. The American diet is said to cause "over-consumptive malnutrition", which means that many of us are eating too much food that lacks the appropriate amount of nutrition we need to be healthy.

If you consume too many empty calories, you increase your chances of developing health problems such as obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes and heart disease. Additionally, the lack of adequate nutrition increases the risk for developing many other diseases. BiophysicalYou measures several revealing nutrition-related biomarkers to give you insights into your nutritional health.

BiophysicalYou Inflammation Biomarkers

Researchers are discovering that inflammation is a dangerous condition that is linked to almost every disease. Inflammation is an activation of your immune system to a real or perceived threat to your body. Common causes of immune activation include bacterial and viral infection. For example, when you have a cold or the flu, your immune system activates to launch an attack and kill the invading bacteria or virus. When the infection is defeated, your immune system returns to its resting state.

The immune system can also activate in response to a host of other factors, including emotions, especially anger and depression, environmental factors such as pollution, dietary factors such as eating large meals and eating a diet high in processed foods, a lack of sleep, etc. Researchers believe your immune system needs to be in a calm relaxed state, activating only when and as needed. That's because when your immune system is in a constant state of activation it can become misdirected and launch an attack on your body. This leads to autoimmune diseases and promotes other disease processes, especially atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. BiophysicalYou measures four important biomarkers that can indicate the presence of inflammation in your body.

BiophysicalYou Complete Blood Count Biomarkers

A complete blood count is a measure of the various cells within your blood. White blood cells are part of the immune system and are responsible for fighting off infection. Unless you have an active infection, your white blood count should be within the normal range.

Red blood cells and hemoglobin are responsible for carrying oxygen to the body and carbon dioxide out of your body, while platelets are important to blood clotting. BiophysicalYou includes a complete blood count with numerous biomarkers.
