About BiophysicalCA/CV

Questions

What is the BiophysicalCA/CV?

The BiophysicalCA/CV is a comprehensive, convenient blood test that monitors blood-based biomarkers associated with cancer and cardiovascular disease, enhancing conventional screening methods.

Who is the BiophysicalCA/CV for?

The BiophysicalCA/CV is for people who have concerns about cancer and cardiovascular disease and want to take a more proactive approach. Although cancer and cardiovascular disease can't always be prevented, physicians know that treatment may be more effective when the disease is detected early. Certain lifestyle habits can also affect the risk for developing these diseases. A healthy diet, healthy weight, regular exercise and smoking cessation are a few of the important lifestyle choices that can reduce the likelihood of developing cancer and cardiovascular disease. Routine screening techniques such as mammography, colonoscopy, skin checks, PAP smears, and others are also helpful in discovering cancer and a basic cholesterol testing is also helpful for cardiovascular evaluation. The Biophysical CA/CV enhances these routine screenings by providing surveillance of both cancer-associated and cardiovascular biomarkers.

Will my insurance pay for this?

Health plans generally do not pay for elective blood evaluation (beyond some very basic tests). However, if your results indicate something that requires further evaluation and testing, there is a good chance that your plan will pay for the follow-up. Your plan administrator will offer you the best information for your situation. These tests are qualified expenses for those who have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or a Health Savings Account (HSA).

Can I take the BiophysicalCA/CV if I'm not feeling well?

Biophysical does not recommend taking the BiophysicalCA/CV on a day that you feel acutely ill, such as with a cold or flu. For people who have ongoing and undiagnosed illness, a more comprehensive evaluation such as the BiophysicalCheck, BiophysicalCore or Biophysical250 is recommended.

What are the benefits of the BiophysicalCA/CV program?

The BiophysicalCA/CV works best as an annual program. In the case of cancer-associated biomarkers, a baseline level can be established and then followed from year to year. Of course, levels fluctuate on a daily basis and it's the profound, rather than the slight, elevations that are concerning. The goal is to discover dramatic elevations when they initially occur, so that an accurate diagnosis can be made and treatment can be started. Cardiovascular disease, on the other hand, is managed by evaluating the risk for developing the disease and then taking action to modify each component of risk. Year-to-year evaluation helps to monitor the effectiveness of treatment and lifestyle modifications

Back to Questions

What if I have an abnormal result?

Biophysical recommends that you show all of your results to your physician. All abnormal results should be evaluated by your physician who can then determine the appropriate course of action. For cardiovascular-associated results your physician will determine the appropriate treatment plan based on your specific results. For some, simply rechecking the biomarker in a few months will be sufficient. For others it will depend on the level of elevation, personal and family history and whether or not there are any symptoms. Profound elevations will require more intensive evaluation and monitoring, while many will choose to manage slight elevations with a “wait and retest” monitoring approach.

Back to Questions

What kinds of cancer-related biomarkers does the BiophysicalCA/CV evaluate?

Biomarkers that are associated with cancer are not always specific to any one particular type. Elevations may indicate any number of different types of cancer, but in general, they are most commonly linked to breast, colon, liver, pancreatic, ovarian, prostate, small cell lung cancer and testicular cancer.

Can the BiophysicalCA/CV evaluate children?

The BiophysicalCA/CV is not designed for those under 17 years of age. In fact, for many biomarkers there are no established normal values for pediatric patients. If a child's physician feels that a certain panel of tests is warranted, we would of course comply with the physician's request.
