Mark B. Chandler, PhD Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Forbes Magazine named him the “Indiana Jones” of medical research in a 1994 article that examined his search through jungles in Southeast Asia and South America for deadly toxins that became cutting-edge treatments for cancer. In 1982, he founded Inland Laboratories Inc. to provide plant and bacterial toxins to the medical research community. As president and chief executive officer of Inland, Dr. Chandler received the KPMG High Technology Entrepreneur of the Year award in 1987. Following the success of Inland Laboratories, Dr. Chandler channeled his interest in discovering new methods to evaluate blood-based biomarkers as important health indicators to found three successive companies to develop innovative biological testing technologies, primarily for academic and pharmaceutical research. In 1995, he co-founded Luminex Corporation (NASDAQ:LMNX), a company that develops, manufactures and markets innovative biological testing technologies to clinical researchers. Dr. Chandler served as chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Luminex until 2002. He founded Rules-Based Medicine in 1998 to further identify and develop multi-analyte testing protocols, where he continues to serve as founding director. Dr. Chandler now leads Biophysical Corporation as chairman and CEO to make this testing directly available to consumers and physicians. Dr. Chandler received his doctorate in immunology from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas. He serves on the Board of the EastWest Institute, the National Center for Genomic Resources, and is a fellow of the New York - based Explorer's Club.
Craig Benson President and Chief Executive Officer, Rules-Based Medicine, Inc. Board Member
Craig Benson joined Rules-Based Medicine, Inc. in January 2002 to direct its spin-off from Luminex Corporation. Until 2004, Benson also served as Chairman of the Board for Equity Resource Partners, LLC, a private investment company. From 1987 through September 2000, he was employed by Service Corporation International (NYSE: SCI), a world leader in death care-related services. During his tenure with SCI, he held various senior executive management positions, which included domestic and international merger and acquisition responsibilities, vice-president of Marketing and Corporate Alliances, as well as president of SCI International, Ltd., SCI's International holding company. From 1990 to 1994, Benson served as president of Investment Capital Corporation, the private equity arm of SCI, which held over $350 million in assets. From 1984 to 1987, he held management positions with Pulaski Investment Corporation, a private holding company engaged in commercial and mortgage banking activities. Benson has served on the Board of Directors of various publicly held entities, including Florafax International, Tanknology Environmental, Inc., Equity Corporation International and Pinnacle Global Group, Inc. He received a BBA degree from Southern Methodist University in 1984.
John Ragard Board Member
Mr. Ragard is a principal of Friess Associates, manager of the Brandywine Funds and an affiliate of New York Stock Exchange-listed Affiliated Managers Group. He is responsible for a team that manages approximately $2 billion of client assets invested in public growth stocks and is focused on the health care and energy industries. During the five years ended 12/31/05, assets for which he was responsible appreciated by over $1 billion, compounding at 28% per annum while, during the same time, the Standard & Poor's 500 rose by only 0.5% percent per year. Previously Mr. Ragard was a managing partner of venture capital firm Horsley Bridge, a leading investor in U.S.-based private companies. Successful private health care investments made by Horsley Bridge include Genentech, Hybritech and IDEC Pharmaceuticals. Mr. Ragard graduated cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business and is a chartered financial analyst.
J. Storey Charbonnet Board Member
Mr. Charbonnet earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Virginia. After graduating from UVA in 1990, Mr. Charbonnet worked in the Corporate Finance Department at the Robinson-Humphrey Company in Atlanta until 1995. Mr. Charbonnet is a Partner at Johnson Rice & Company, LLC, where he has been employed since March of 1995. He is co-founder of Green Turtle Partners, LP, and the managing member of Green Turtle Capital Management, LLC. Mr. Charbonnet serves on the Board of Directors of Good Shepherd Nativity Mission School, an inner-city school.
C. Richard Lyons, MD, PhD Board Member
Dr. Lyons received his MD degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1987 and completed residency training in Internal Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital. He earned a fellowship in Oncology/Hematology at Brigham and Women's Hospital and is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Hematology. Dr. Lyons is an assistant professor at the University of New Mexico Department of Internal Medicine and his special interests and expertise are hematology/oncology and mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Liener Temerlin Special Advisor to the Board
A veteran of scores of award-winning marketing campaigns, Mr. Temerlin maintains a private consulting practice in Dallas. He began his advertising career as a copywriter with Glenn Advertising in 1953, later serving in a number of capacities before being named chairman in 1970. Under his leadership, the agency began acquiring the national and international accounts that propelled Dallas into a position as one of the premier centers for advertising in the nation. During his more than 50 years of association with the agency and its successors, Mr. Temerlin established long-time client relationships with major corporations such as Bank of America, Hyatt Hotels, Subaru, American Airlines, JCPenney, Pfizer, Warner Lambert, ExxonMobil and Texas Instruments. In 2001 the school of advertising at Southern Methodist University was named in Mr. Temerlin's honor, and he was inducted into the American Advertising Federation's Hall of Fame in 2004. In addition to these and many other honors, Mr. Temerlin has held leadership positions with a number of national, academic and civic-based organizations including the American Film Institute, Southern Methodist University, Southwestern Medical Foundation, the Dallas Museum of Art and the Dallas Symphony Association.
